Black-owned varsity jackets under $100: the lineup
All eight below are two-tone fleece varsities with striped rib at the collar, cuffs and hem, all at 380 gsm, so they have some weight to them. Most are 70% polyester and 30% cotton; the navy/orange Park League is a cotton-rich blend (about 62% cotton). The fit is loose, unisex. The chenille-look letters are printed flat, not stitched patches. That keeps the price down and means nothing peels or snags in the wash.
Playground Myth Park League (black, red, green, navy/orange)
Playground Myth is for the kid picked last who ended up running the court. Started last. Finished loud. The Park League varsity has a collegiate P on the left chest, a hoop-and-ball seal on the right, and PLAYGROUND MYTH across the back with PARK LEAGUE · QUEENS NY along the bottom. It comes in four colors: Park League in black, Park League in red and Park League in green, each with white sleeves, and the newer Park League in navy/orange, a navy body with white sleeves, orange and cream lettering and no right-chest seal. Abstract Weirdo (three styles)
Abstract Weirdo is for people who never fit the team and stopped trying to. In weird we trust. The In Weird We Trust varsity is the loud one: the word weird in ten languages across the back. The Club varsity is the quiet one, coffee with white sleeves and a script back. The WEIRDO. varsity in green sits in the middle, printed tone on tone in two deep greens with cream sleeves. Our house label. Overlooked. Then overbooked. The IMUSKOP Cracked Arch varsity is black and white with the cracked IMUSKOP arch across the back and the IM seal on the chest. If you only buy one and want it to go with everything, this is the one.
From The Black Champions: a work jacket instead
The Black Champions doesn't have a varsity in the line right now. If you want a jacket from them, the Bad Day Work Jacket is $95 too: an army green heavyweight work jacket (445 gsm, oversized fit) with THE BLACK CHAMPIONS arched across the back with gold sparks and a workwear oval patch on the chest. Why fleece varsities instead of wool and leather?
A wool body with leather sleeves is the traditional varsity, and it can easily run a few hundred dollars. Fleece gets you the same look for a lot less, and it's easier to live with. How to pick your size
These run loose. If you're wearing it over a tee, go true to size. If you're layering over a hoodie, true to size still works for most people, because of the loose cut.
