Description
A newspaper front page. Freedom’s Journal, New York, March 16, 1827, was the first Black-owned newspaper in the United States, and its first issue opened with a line that still lands: “We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” That line is the headline here, with the dateline, the masthead between the rules, and three narrow columns carrying the real words of that 1827 opening editorial, period spelling and all. The back carries the next line: too long have others spoken for us.
Nobody handed them a platform. They built one, set the type, and said their own piece. That is the whole spirit of The Black Champions.
